SELF –EFFICACY: IT’S INFLUENCE ON THE ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENTS OF UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS

This research work examined the influence of self efficacy on the academic achievements of students in their various choice of degree programme, its effect on their commitment in class attendance and academic performance generally. The researcher used pre-experimental design also known as “no control” experimental design in this study, the population comprise of three thousand (3,000) undergraduate students 2009/2010 academic session in Ambrose Alli University Ekpoma, out of which five hundred (500) students were randomly selected for this study. The study revealed that students’ who enters degree programme with high self – efficacy are always extra committed and always achieved their goals, and that a high percentage of the number of students who enrolled for degree programme per time actually chooses the course without having adequate information or deep understanding of what it entails. Hence the high rate of extension students and poor academic performance. It also revealed that those who entered with high self efficacy always graduate with good grade average GPA of 2.400 and above without stress. While those who enter with low self efficacy hardly achieve up to 1.000 GPA. In the analysis 81.7 % agreed that self- efficacy motives students’ commitment in their studies which eventually lead to their success academically. Based on the findings of this study, Parents should not force their children to read any course, children having gone through secondary education should be given the freedom to make their choice of interest in degree programmes that builds their morale in academic achievement
