OCCUPATIONAL STRESS AMONGST ACADEMIC STAFF: EFFECT ON SERVICE DELIVERY (A CASE OF AUCHI POLYTECHNIC, AUCHI)

In this study, an attempt is made to examine the relationship between occupational stress among academic staff and the quality of service delivery. The study involves a sample on 150 academic staff (lecturers) out of the 449 lecturers currently in services of Auchi Polytechnic, Auchi as at 31st, March, 2011 through the judgemental sampling technique. A 15-item questionnaire constructed by the researchers, validated by three experts and which as an internal consistency coefficient of 28 percent served as the instrument of data collection. This study is empirically established, using the chi-square (X2 ) at 5% level of significance. The implication of this study is that quality of output of lecturers in Auchi Polytechnic Auchi is affected by their workload. Consequently, the research suggests manageable carrying capacity, less administrative responsibilities on lecturers by management e.t.c.
