ACQUISITION OF VOCATIONAL AND TECHNICAL SKILLS FOR SUSTAINABLE LIVELIHOOD IN NIGERIA

This paper critically examined the- relevance of the acquisition of Vocational and Technical skills for sustainable livelihood in Nigeria. The unemployment trend in Nigeria was x-rayed based on relevant literatures. The paper agreed with the position of many authors in the literatures that most people are not employed because they do not possess any employable skills. It was identified that the unemployment problem can be minimized through the acquisition of Vocational and Technical skills. The paper took a position that Vocational and Technical skills could be acquired both in technical institutions and roadside workshops. All categories of persons could be engaged in vocational and technical skills acquisition in full or part time programmes. The paper strongly believed that individuals who have skills are more likely to be sure of sustainable livelihood. It recommended that vocational and technical education programme should be restructured to accommodate workers who wish to be engaged in vocational skill training.
